The festival begins with Mahalaya, and ends with Navami. It is filled with a lot of fun, food, dandiya, dholls etc.. It begins with the advent of Goddess Durga from her mythological home in Kailash. And the next 9 days are celebrated with worship, dance, sindoor khela, dhoomi & drummers.
As we all know, Kolkata has the best artisans for jewellery, for silverware and even for Pandals. There are thousands of dazzling & different themed Pandals built all over the country, majority of which are in West Bengal. Each Pandal is unique, beautiful and extra-ordinarily extravagant. In Kolkata, the best pandal wins quite a fortune.
The dates of the puja change every year. It is usually a post monsoon festival, however this year the monsoons refuse to leave. But Kolkatans will not let anything hamper their Pandal Hopping fun.
